Youtiful is a slimline backpack that – by changing the straps – can easily be used as a backpack, crossbody, or shoulder bag. The pattern can be sewn using a wide variety of fabric/material choices such as cotton, upholstery fabric, decorator fabric, canvas (waxed or unwaxed), cork, thin leather, or denim.

All bags pictured are sewn on domestic machines.

Finished size: 12″ x 10″ x 2,75″ – 30cm x 25cm x 7cm

What do you need to make one slim backpack?

Fabric

  • 1/2 yard 44” wide exterior fabric (front and back panel and straps)
  • 1/4 yard 44” wide contrasting fabric (bottom gusset and connector tabs)
  • 1/2 yard 44” wide quilting weight lining fabric

Interfacing and stabilizer

  • 2 yards 21” wide fusible woven interfacing (like Pellon Shapeflex SF101)or 1 yard 44” wide fusible woven interfacing (like wovenfix, Vilene G700, plakdoek)
  • 1/2 yard 18” wide Decovil Light or FQ Sandwich fixor 1/2 yard 36” wide fusible fleece interfacing (like Pellon Thermolam TP971F)

Zipper and hardware

  • 10” all-purpose zipper #3 or #5 (back zippered pocket)
  • 8 1/2” all-purpose zipper #3 (recessed front pocket; handbag zipper not recommended)
  • Four rivets (the thickness of your fabric will tell you what size rivet you need)

Tools and notions

  • Double Sided Tape (attaching the zippers)
  • Fabric glue (Beacon Fabri-tac) (optional)
  • (Erasable) marking pen

For the straps:

  • Four 1” rectangle rings (connectors)
  • Two 1” adjustable strap glides (strap)
  • OR (if you would like to use this as a convertible bag)
  • Two 1” rectangle rings (top connectors)
  • Two 1” D-rings (bottom connectors)
  • Two 1” swivel clips
  • Two 1” adjustable strap sliders
